The Movies Have It Right…Or Do They…?

The movies have it right… or do they?
Most people have seen films about psychics. Someone is always solving a mystery, or having graphic visions of a murder. Lately I’ve been contemplating how the art of psychic practice has been portrayed in film and television, and how this has shaped the public’s perception of what I do.
Myth #1 – There are always high stakes. For drama purposes, supernatural films often feature psychics being used in very high-stakes situations. Usually, some mystery has gripped a town, there’s been a wide-scale injustice, and there’s nearly always a grisly murder that they’re tasked with solving.
Fact – Life isn’t always high stakes real life ebbs and flows subtly, and it’s not always about life-or-death situations. Much of what I do involves tuning into the channels in people’s day-to-day lives that reveal deeper truths that don’t always look flashy, but are nevertheless important. The movies would have us believe that everything is a ‘do or die’ situation, and that one choice can make or break a life. But a psychic’s real work is less about dealing with situational extremes, and more about examining the person and the energetic patterns that make their life what it is. You can’t see the big things unless you see the little things – this is crucial!
Myth #2 – Things are always black and white. Most psychics in movies are tasked with capturing ‘the bad guy.’ The good guys and the bad guys are clearly delineated so there’s no confusion for the audience. Life and its happenings are painted in a very polarised way, in binary terms, such as ‘good’ guy, ‘bad’ guy, ‘right’ choice or ‘wrong’ choice. During readings, I often get asked, “Is it good news? Or bad news? Is the symbol negative or positive?”
Fact – Life is rarely black and white. Sometimes I feel pressured into giving black and white answers to alleviate people’s anxiety. But on the whole, I prefer to frame things I see as to whether they are good or bad for the person I’m reading for. I always consider the individual – that’s a vital distinction, and something that I feel sets me apart from other psychics. If you consider the person in front of you, with all their unique characteristics, there is no such thing as black and white. There’s only a vast rainbow of things and people that populate the world, and I’m lucky enough that I can tap into this, and use it for people’s benefit.
Myth #3 – Everyone is powerless. The way that psychic practices are shown in mainstream media tends to promote the message that people are ultimately powerless in their lives. Destiny is seen as fixed, and people visit psychics so that they can “find out what will happen to them.” Not only do I find this message exploitative, I also feel it’s dishonest. Let me tell you why.
Fact – We’re all capable of change. Yes, there are times when I see things that are destined to happen. In spite of what anyone does, they can and do occur. We can’t stop these predictions from happening. However, we can choose how we respond to them. While it’s true that we can’t control what happens to us, we can choose how we deal with it.
The way we choose to deal with these things can influence our futures in ways untold. So regardless of what I might see in the tea leaves, I never underestimate the power of choice that we all inherently have.
If you enjoyed this list of myths, please give the post a ‘like’ on Facebook. It’s a rich subject that I’ve barely tapped the surface on, so if popular, I may do more of these in future.
Until next time.
